LION DAYS

A couple weekends ago, Ross proposed a walk to Columbia City, a neighborhood about 4-5 miles south of ours. We could take the bus back, he said. Despite the overcast sky, it sounded like a good idea. There is an excellent bakery in Columbia City, and a walk always takes you down a street you've never biked or driven down before.

I was impressed by these fancy lions, guarding a parking lot.

After a ginger cookie and some coffee in Columbia City, it began to rain, but we wanted to walk some more anyway, so we didn't catch the bus after all.

On a neighborhood street we found these sidwalk squares embedded with collections of all sorts. The action figure collection included an action figure of Famous Librarian Nancy Pearl. Maybe someday Ross will be a Famous Librarian with an action figure of his own...

We stood around in the rain, checking out the various collections: bike parts, computer parts, keys, bottle caps, religious icons...When we were ready to continue our walk we looked up at the house where the collectors lived and saw them watching us from their window. They waved. maybe on a sunny day we'll return in hopes that they will come out and talk to us.

I think we may have been a little lost on our return trip, but at one point we realized we were on top of the bike tunnel that leads to the I-90 Bridge.

Those are just about the keenest sidewalk squares I've ever seen.

By the way, "Auberg(e)" means inn or apartment in French.

Does that make an aubergine a vegetable big enough to live in? Maybe if you scraped out the seeds? That movie title, L'Auberge Espagnole, did confuse me at first...The Spanish Eggplant? (I thought).
