IN THE RAIN SHADOW

Way, way back in June, Ross and I took a short bike tour in the San Juan Islands.

Lopez Island was definitely my favorite, although we only stopped on Lopez, San Juan, and Vancouver.

It was the solstice weekend. I think I took this photo around 10:45 pm.

One thing I like about bike touring on islands is that you can only ride so far before you have to ferry on to the next island.

We spent one night in Victoria.

Munro's Books is not only a beautiful bookstore, chock full of great recommendations, but it is owned by Alice Munro's first husband. I think she lives on the north end of Vancouver Island part of the year.

One of our favorite spots was the English Camp on San Juan, where English soldiers lived for 12 years after an English pig rooted for potatoes in an American garden and the American farmer shot the pig. At the other end of the island the Americans chopped down all the trees and set up a camp of their own. The two armies held their ground for 12 years (1859-1872) while the two countries argued over who owned the San Juans. When the English left, they took their flagpole with them.

I imagine it was rough being a soldier on San Juan island back then, but the English picked a really lovely spot for their camp.

We caught the last ferry back from San Juan to Lopez on our last night. The sunset ferry ride was great, but riding to our campsite and setting up in the dark was not.
