FOR LOVE AND BUTTER

First order of business: pie crust.

Ross made the mashed potatoes.

Across town, Jerritt cut the backbone out of the turkey. (TS took these turkey prep photos)

This method of removing the backbone, and smashing the bird down before roasting it, is called spatchcocking--a word as ugly, or even uglier than the process. (But goodness, it was delicious.)

The feast took place at Jerritt and TaraShea's house.

Ross got dolled up to give thanks.

Sloan and Jenny were there.

Ellie guarded the house.

Drew wore his best thanking attire.

TS and Jerritt have acquired quite a collection of typewriters.

The latest one has a cursive typeset!

We typed a partial list of things we're thankful for. A couple of things I remember: clouds and pillows.

Poor, delicious thing.

Sloan and Jenny brought the humane feast--wild rice stuffed tofurky.

Jerritt snapped a few photos before sitting down to enjoy his meal. I guess he was working too hard in the kitchen because I didn't get many photos of him.

After dinner we walked to a nearby high school. Sloan and Jenny brought a basketball. (J.)

"Tryptophan is an amino acid necessary for normal growth in infants and for nitrogen balance in adults." (That it makes us sleepy is urban legend, I think.)

Drew was not the winner of our P.I.G. game.

As far as I can tell, the true source of sleepiness is a warm house, full of cooking heat, not to mention full bellies and a few glasses of wine.

Our second Thanksgiving together=our second round of Exsquisite Corpses.

Before we left, Jerritt took the second annual Family Portrait.

Thanks, friends.

REAL LIVE EPHEMERA

We drove down to Portland for the opening of Myles' shop, Ampersand.

It's in a great spot on Alberta Street, surrounded by other unique shops and restaurants. It was bustling.

And it was so good to see these two!

The tiny shop was packed. I'm kind of glad it's 3 hours away--otherwise I'd be in there all the time, spending all my money.

We got to meet a few of Myles and Carey's new friends.

The shop looks great, but it was hard to take photos because it was so crowded.

The next day Ross and I got a little tour of Carey's office, which is located above a cool little garden/nursery.

She works for Rapha now. She shares this awesome office space with two other people--the whole of the Rapha Portland crew.

Rapha is an English company. Portland meets England on their windowsill.

We walked up the street for brunch, passing a lightbulb store on the way. I never knew there were so many light bulb options.

Then back to Myles and Carey's house to pick up Carey's cyclocross bike.

We drove out to the fairgrounds for Carey's race.

It was the second day of sun after days on end of rain, so the course was wonderfully muddy.

Carey wore her white kit anyway. It was the coolest suit on the course.

She was looking pretty tough, but her bike had a mechanical failure, so we didn't get to see her in a moment of triumph. But it was fun watching anyway.
